How to connect a network drive
Data in the folder "My Documents (Eigene Dateien)" are copied between server and client computer
at every login and logout. Therefore, logging in can take a considerable time if you store a
big amount of data here. This time may be reduced by moving those large data directories to a network folder on the
server.
Those users who got a new account after October 15, 2004 already should have a link of drive
Z: to \\dozent\user\XYZUSER .
For all others:
The following procedure describes the creation of a network folder.
- Double click "My Computer (Arbeitsplatz)"
- In the field "Address" specify: \\dozent\user (RETURN)
- File - New -> Folder -> XYZUSER (replace XYZUSER by your account name)
- "right click" XYZUSER
- Properties
- Security settings
- deselect field "Allow inheritable permissions ..."
- In the window "Security ..." select "Copy"
- Within the window "Properties of XYZUSER":
- Add
- Search for your account name
- Add
- "Full Control" for your own account name
- Group Studenten: Select only privileges wanted, mostly
"Read, Execute ; List folder contents ; Read" which means that
others can read but not modify your data
- Double click "My Computer"
- Tools
- Map network drive
- Select Drive: (e.g. Y:)
- Folder: \\dozent\user\XYZUSER (replace XYZUSER by your account name)
- Select the checkbox "Reconnect at logon" if you want to have Y: available
at every login
Once this is completed you should move your large directories from "My Documents"
to the network drive Y: .
