Zeolites, Catalysts and Ion Exchange

Lecturers: Michael Fischer, Iris Spieß

Content:

Zeolites and related compounds belong to one of the most important materials classes as catalysts and ion exchangers. The class covers the following topics:
definitions and basic terms
molecular sieve properties
crystal chemical characterization (framework topology; primary, secondary, and polyhedral building units; framework density, vertex symbol; loop configurations)
overview of main applications, especially as catalysts and ion exchangers
natural zeolite minerals
classification and standardization of crystal structures
mesoporous compounds
syntheses procedures
lab work including syntheses and ion exchange modifications

Skills:

At the end of this class, the students will be able to synthesize, characterize, and classify zeolite-type compounds.

Exam:

laboratory report
