From Atoms to Minerals - Mineralogy and Crystallography: Exercise

Lecturers: Gustavo Macedo de Paula Santos, Ella Schmidt

Content:

complementary exercises to gain knowledge of fundamental terms and concepts in mineralogy and crystalography:
exploring selected minerals and rocks
concept of energy minimization (software), Mohs´ hardness as an example of structure-property-relationships, symmetry elements, examples for the application of structure types (models): models and software applications (visualization), examples of mineral classification based on external (macroscopic) properties; calculation of oxide formulas from compositional data, macroscopic vs. microscopic composition; demo-excercises of polarising microscopy,
evaluation of a simple powder diffractogram (Bragg, d-I-list)

Competences:

basic knowledge of the most important terms and concepts in mineralogy and crystalography:
• ability to apply first expertise and skills to classify minerals
• develop skills to sort minerals into classes of minerals
• ability to apply first expertise and skills to determine crystal symmetries
• develop skills to sort crystals into classes of crystals

Assessment:

will be tested as part of the exam (Klausur)

Exam Form:

written exam
