Scientific Writing for Natural Scientists

This scientific writing course aims to demystify the writing process and teach the fundamental skills required to write science effectively. The lessons will focus primarily on; understanding the components of research paper/thesis design, how to read and evaluate papers critically, how to impart scientific knowledge concisely and clearly, and how to construct and communicate scientific arguments efficiently. The lessons will include theoretical lectures, in-class exercises and course work to complete at home.
1) Learning the “Rule of Thumb” for writing a scientific paper/thesis – the structure, design, and writing style. Also how to avoid a writer´s block.
2) Understanding how to organize, time-manage and plan your research and report writing (paper or thesis).
3) Recognizing the scientific “gap” and the “newness” in a topic and learning to formulate scientific questions and the “Introduction” so the research paper/ thesis extends´ current knowledge in that field.
4) Understanding writing styles in conjunction with the target audience.
5) Learning Methodology in the context of time management for thesis work, research and paper organization, and the classic scientific “Methods” section.
6) Learning how to condense and summarize information from the literature for e.g. the “Introduction” and from the paper/thesis for the “Abstract” and “Conclusions.”
7) Learning how to write a “Discussion” by correctly referencing and paraphrasing published scientific work. Avoiding plagiarism!
8) Learning how to illustrate your writing, especially “Results”- recognizing and presenting different data types in tables, figures, flow diagrams and plates.
9) Recognizing how to prepare a “Reference List” and different reference sources.
10) Group discussions and critical reviews on what makes a good/bad paper and abstract and on the ethics of publishing science.
