Cores drilled from a fossil annually-banded coral of last interglacial age (Bonaire, southern Caribbean Sea).

The project CaribClim II reconstructs the range of seasonality and interannual to decadal climate variability in the Caribbean during the last interglacial period by analysing fossil corals from Bonaire, which will be accurately dated by the 230Th/U method. Combined with climate model simulations, the project identifies forcing mechanisms of last interglacial climate variability on these timescales. Sr/Ca and oxygen isotope ratios in corals will provide monthly resolved reconstructions of temperature and hydrologic balance at the sea surface for short time intervals, robustly resolving the annual cycle. State-of-the-art climate models will be used to simulate the evolution of the hydrological cycle (oxygen isotopes) and surface temperature over decades to millennia during the last interglacial. The approach will quantify the range of natural climate variability on seasonal to decadal timescales during the last interglacial. This will contribute to successful predictions of future Caribbean climate.

Methods

Quantitative and semi-quantitative paleo-temperature and paleo-hydrology reconstructions (seasonality, interannual to decadal variability), U-series dating, coupled climate modelling (including oxygen isotopes)
