Do abrupt changes in the large-scale circulation of the Atlantic Ocean occur in interglacials?

Considerable uncertainty exists with respect to the future evolution of the Atlantic Ocean thermohaline circulation. The scenarios range from almost no change to an irreversible cessation of deep-water formation in the North Atlantic. Time-series of oceanographic measurements are too short to “calibrate” models. INTERDYNAMIC will contribute to the assessment of the future stability of the thermohaline circulation by studying the processes underlying interglacial variations of the large-scale ocean circulation.
