Today APECS challenged us to share our micro-scale Polar Numbers. And since we are an Arctic based research training group our knowledge about Antarctica is on a micro-scale range compared to our knowledge about the Arctic so we decided to\u00a0change sides today and summarize some <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PolarNumbers?src=hash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#PolarNumbers<\/a> about Antarctica for you:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>17,968<\/strong> km (11,165 mi) is the<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Polar_Research\/status\/1041593723426152448\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> length of Antarctica&#8217;s coastline <\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>~ 98%<\/strong> of Antarctica is covered by ice<\/li>\n<li><strong>34 million<\/strong> years ago <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/352\/6281\/34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antarctica&#8217;s ice sheet started to increase rapidly<\/a>, before that it was nearly ice-free<\/li>\n<li><strong>1820<\/strong> is the year until when Antarctica has been undiscovered<\/li>\n<li><strong>1959<\/strong> is the year when <strong>12<\/strong> countries signed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ats.aq\/e\/ats.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Antarctic Treaty<\/a>, followed by further <strong>38<\/strong> countries, an agreement that prohibits military activities, mineral mining, nuclear explosions and nuclear waste disposal, it also supports scientific research and protects Antarctica&#8217;s ecozone\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1657\" style=\"width: 535px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/arctrain.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/VostokIceCoreRecord_Petit_etal_1999.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1657\" class=\"wp-image-1657 \" src=\"https:\/\/arctrain.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/VostokIceCoreRecord_Petit_etal_1999-300x204.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"357\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arctrain.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/VostokIceCoreRecord_Petit_etal_1999-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/arctrain.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/VostokIceCoreRecord_Petit_etal_1999-768x522.png 768w, https:\/\/arctrain.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/VostokIceCoreRecord_Petit_etal_1999-1024x696.png 1024w, https:\/\/arctrain.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/VostokIceCoreRecord_Petit_etal_1999.png 1134w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1657\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vostok ice core record displaying solar insolation, methane and carbon dioxide concentration as well as past temperatures and oxygen isotope records. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/20859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Petit et al., 1999<\/a>)<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>\u221289.2\u00a0\u00b0C<\/strong> is the coldest natural air temperature ever recorded on Earth on July 21st, 1983 at Vostok research station in Antarctica<\/li>\n<li><strong>3700 m<\/strong> beneath Vostok research station, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/sciencemain\/antarcticas-hidden-lake-vostok-found-teem-life-6C10561955\">there is a freshwater lake (Lake Vostok)<\/a> which contains more than <strong>3500<\/strong> different organisms. It is the world&#8217;s <strong>6th<\/strong> largest lake by volume.<\/li>\n<li><strong>420,000 years<\/strong> of climate record are saved in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/20859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ice core from Vostok<\/a> research station<\/li>\n<li><strong>~ 1.55 million sq. km<\/strong> is the size of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/science-environment-37789594\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world&#8217;s largest marine protection area<\/a> in the Ross Sea, where commercial fishing is prohibited for at least the coming 35 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Polar week, day three.
