Sea ice in the Arctic is receding and the first ice free summer could accur as soon as by the middle of this century. How unusual would such situation be for the Arctic? Answering this question requires access to reconstructions of the sea-ice extent in the past. This is the research field of Prof. de Vernal from the Université du Québec à Montréal in Canada. In her presentation, she will review the history of sea-ice extent in the past and explore the significance of this knowledge for future projections. Anne de vernal is togetehr with Michal Kucera from our department the speaker od the international German-Canadian research training group ArcTrain.
