Coastal Processes
Lecturers: Alexander Bartholomä, Dierk Hebbeln
This field trip focuses on recent coastal processes and environments in the North Sea. As coastal settings made up by unconsolidated sediments are predominantly controlled by the available hydrodynamic energy, this field trip will follow the strong energy gradient at the German North Sea coast from high energy conditions at the open North Sea coast at the island of Spiekeroog to very low energy conditions in the largely protected Jade Bay. Topics addressed during the field trip are: structure of the Wadden Sea (tidal flats and wetlands), salt marshes, beach morphodynamics, development of barrier islands (example of Spiekeroog) and coastal protection systems. In addition, marine geological methods and sampling systems will be also introduced and used by the students during a one-day excursion onboard the research vessel Senckenberg.
- Understand the main active coastal processes and environments in the southern North Sea
- Understand interferences between natural processes and human activities, especially related to coastal protection
- Experience sampling and surveying methods in marine geology
